What got you into sharpening knives?
Getting my knives sharpened was a chore. Other sharpening services left me dissatisfied with the poor communication, inconsistent pricing, or over-polished edge that couldn’t cut into tomatoes.
During COVID, I began learning the skill through a local mentor, YouTube, and online knife sharpening communities. I started with Japanese whetstones to master the fundamentals of maintaining a consistent angle and minimizing the amount of steel removed. I upgraded to belt machines that have been customized for knife sharpening for a more refined and repeatable process. Word spread and neighbors began asking if I could sharpen their knives as well.
In the beginning, I’d spend the morning driving to homes to pick up the knives. I’d sharpen them from my garage and drop them back off in the afternoon. I loved exploring new parts of town but I was spending more time driving than sharpening. On my way home one day, I stopped by Harmony Farms and asked if I could set up outside their store. I’ve been there every Saturday since.
I aim to provide a quality service that is convenient, reliable, and maybe even fun. If you’d like to follow my journey, I’m active on Instagram & TikTok @steven_sharpens
